Information Regarding DIET’S at a glance
The National Policy of Education, 1986 and POA, 1992 have led to establishment of District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) throughout India for the furtherance of Teacher Education in district level. These DIETs have since then undertaken extensive teacher education programmes both in-service and pre-service along with several other entrusted activities. In terms of memorandum of the Government in School Education vide No.79-SE (EE)/SCERT-4/2012 dated 29.01.2013 the administrative and academic control of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) of West Bengal has been delegated to SCERT (WB).There are 19 DIETs. Also in West Bengal 10 DIETs are having their Second campuses.
DIETs in West Bengal: Their Genesis, Roles & Functions
In pursuance of the National Policy on Education, 1986 and subsequent to Programme of Action 1992, West Bengal had availed the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Teacher Education for establishing District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Thus in most districts the government upgraded a selected, existing Government Primary Teachers’ Training Institutes (PTTIs) to DIETs. Apart from that the state has also set up new DIETs in the districts where a suitable PTTI for up gradation was not available. In this State, 16 such DIETs (13 through up gradation of the PTTIs and 3through new constructions) have been set up.
For strengthening pedagogic practices activities involving intensive in-service teachers’ training packages, development of text books and supplementary reading materials, studies and action research at the district and sub-district levels and institutionalized academic support to primary and upper primary schools and to ensure all these activities achieve the goals, there is a need of a very strong and vibrant institutional framework at the district level. DIETs are being established in the districts to provide this framework and to strengthen the delivery mechanism of SSA.
The DIETs are expected to undertake, among others, the following specific activities:
- Initiatives to upgrade the quality of the teaching-learning process in the Districts in elementary education
- Orientation and capacity building of elementary and pre-school teachers through pre-service and in-service education
- Preparation of district plans for universalisalion of elementary education as well as up gradation of quality of education
- Development of District specific teaching and learning materials
- Support to sub-district resource centers
- Research to build an improved understanding of elementary education in the district
- Activities to improve and support community involvement in elementary education
- Activities to support training programmes in adult education
- Strengthening of their own capacities.
